Encouragement of seeking out mental health resources when in need is the idea behind The National Day Without Stigma event at Chemeketa Oct. 9.

The event seeks to reduce stigmas associated with seeking help with mental health. The statistics, per student mental health advocacy organization Active Minds

  • 48 percent of college students feel overwhelmed by all they have to do
  • 51 percent of college students experienced overwhelming anxiety within the past year
  • But only 2 percent of college students said they would seek help from a mental help professional in time of need.

The event will be an open walkthrough-style from 11 am to 2 pm in the Student Center. Butcher block paper will be available for students to write and share their stories about mental health. Information on mental health resources will also be available. Sign-ups to start an Active Minds chapter at Chemeketa will also be available. Chapters currently exist at Linfield College, Oregon State, and the University of Portland.

Pizza and refreshments will be served at noon.
