SBDC participant shows balloon prowess in Vegas

Maybe once upon a time you were shown how to make a balloon animal. A dog. A giraffe. A dog that probably looked more like a giraffe, now that you really think about it.

But Betsy Vega’s balloon design skills go way beyond that. And not just being able to clearly tell the difference between dogs and giraffes. Think instead a full Arabian Nights display or entire dresses made of colorful balloons.

Vega, who participates in the Edge Business Accelerator at Chemeketa’s Small Business Development Center, recently took her balloon design talents to Las Vegas and the annual Bling Bling Balloon Jam. Her second-place finish in the Large Sculpture category cemented her as one of the best when it comes to making things from balloons.

The display, which you can see a picture of below, took a team of four 26 hours straight to complete. The team also made a balloon dress that was worn in a Zappos-sponsored fashion show. Balloon Jam participants came from across America and 10 countries.

Vega operates numerous small businesses, including BR Konexion, an event planning and decoration service. As a member of the Edge Business Accelerator, she has access to her own office space at the Chemeketa Center for Business & Industry downtown, the resources from SBDC, networking with other business owners and more.
