Chemeketa’s Summer 2019 Artist-in-Residence, Junwei Zhang, will showcase work produced during the first show of the new year in the Gretchen Schuette Art Gallery.
The show Flat Tire, Considering the Commute is a thoughtful look at a daily event that we take for granted. How does the use of the car limit our experience of the world? How does the activity of commuting lead to division between us, or at the very least complacency? Junwei Zhang endeavors to pose these questions and let the viewer answer. Through the use of found objects, everyday objects that are used as a medium for art, and installation, the use of art to transform a space, Junwei Zhang invites the viewer to experience the materials of the commute from a different perspective.
Zhang is a Graduate Teaching Fellow and MFA candidate at the University of Oregon. He received his Bachelor of Arts from Sichuan University in China. His work “focuses on rethinking the existing logic/rule and personal disconnectedness” and has been shown in China, New York and across the Pacific Northwest.
The gallery is located downstairs in Building 3 on the Salem Campus.
